There are four means modes of transport: roadways, railways, waterways and airways.
• Roadways: These are the most commonly used means of transport especially for short distances. Road provide door-to-door service. They also provide a link between railway stations, air and seaports. Roads can be metalled as well as unmetalled. Highways, subways and flyovers are roads serving different purposes.
• Railways: These carry heavy goods and people over long distances quickly and cheaply. The railway network is well developed over the plain areas. Advanced technological skills have enabled laying of railway lines in difficult mountain terrains also.
• Waterways: These are the cheapest for carrying heavy and bulky goods over long distances. This means of transport has been in use since early days. It comprises inland waterways and sea routes.
• Airways: These are the fastest means of transport. Travelling in air is most comfortable but at the same time most expensive too.
