Chapter 8 The Bear Story Class 7 English Summary

Once there lived a lady near the border of a big forest. She had a pet bear that she had found in the forest half dead of hunger. It was very small and weak. She and her old cook brought him up on the bottle. He grew up to be a big bear but he was the most amiable bear and did not harm anybody. He was friendly with the children, the ponies in the stable and the dogs. The bear was very fond of apples. He tried to mess with the beehives once but he was severely punished for this. He was chained, for two days and learnt his lesson well.

He was put to chain only at night or on Sundays when his mistress would go out to spend some time with her married sister. Her sister lived on the other side of the mountain-lake. It was not safe for the bear to go through the dense forest with all the temptation for him there.

One Sunday, when the lady went to her sister's house, she chained the bear as usual. When she was about half way through the forest, she was horrified to see the bear coming towards her at full speed. The lady was very angry. She ordered him to go back at once. The bear did not want to go back. Rather he kept on sniffing at her. At last the lady hit him on the nose with her parasol. The bear then turned around and moved back. The lady came home in the evening. The bear was sitting in his usual place. He looked very sorry for himself. The lady was still very angry and scolded him.

The old cook, hearing the lady, rushed out from the kitchen and asked her angrily of the reason for which she scolded him. She asked the lady not to scold the bear as he had been good the whole day and had been sitting at home for the the entire day. The bear whom the lady hit was some other bear.
