- Evans a kleptomaniac was imprisoned thrice and all the time escaped from the prison. Now he was in the prison for the 4th time and all of a sudden developed curiosity to appear in O-level German Examination which also was an effort to break the prison.
- The Governor takes utmost care to see that he would not be fooled. Every care was taken to make Evans prepare for the exam.
- He was tutored by a German tutor for 6 months. The day before the exam the tutor wishes good luck but makes it clear that he had hardly any ‘chance of getting through.’ But Evans gives an ironical twist to the tutor’s observation by saying “I may surprise everybody.”
- On the day of the exam Jackson and Stephens visited Evans cell and took away everything that may help him injure himself. Evans was insisted to take away the hat but he refused saying that it was lucky charm.
- Evans cell was bugged so that the Governor could himself listen to each and every conversation in the cell. The invigilator Rev. S. Mc Leery too was searched and left him to complete the task. Stephen sitting outside the cell every now and then peeped into the cell.
- The exam went on smoothly. Stephen escorted the invigilator to the main gate and took a look into Evans cell and found the invigilator (actually Evans) wounded, informed the Governor. The latter was to be hospitalized but informed that he was alright and asked them to follow Evans. Thus he escaped the prison.
- When the invigilator was not found in the hospital they went to the residence of Rev. S. Mc Leery only to find him ’bound and gagged in his study in Broad Street”. He has been there, since 8.15 a.m. Now everything was clear to the Governor.
- Evan escaped the prison the 4th time. But by taking the hint from the question paper the Governor reached the hotel where Evans was and captured him and came to know how he planned his escape and said that his game was over. Evans surrenders himself to the Governor.

- The moment they are rid of the Governor, the so called prison officer-a friend of Evans unlocks the handcuffs and asks the driver to move fast and Evans tells him to turn to Newbury. Evans, thus, has the last laugh.

It is the month of early March. The secretary of the Examination Board receives a call from the Governor of the H.M. Prison, Oxford. He tells that a prisoner named Evans has started night classes in O Level German. Now he wants to attain some academic qualification. The Secretary replies that there is no need to worry. All the necessary forms and other requisite material will be sent. They will give him a chance. He enquires about Evans. The Governor tells him that Evans has no record of violence. Rather he is an amusing fellow. He is one of the stars at the Christmas concert.
The Secretary asks him if they can arrange a room where Evans can sit in for the examination. The Governor tells that the room of Evans can be used for this purpose.
The Secretary agrees and tells that they could get a parson from St. Mary Mags to invigilate.

यह एक दिलचस्प कहानी है जो बताती है कि किस तरह जेम्ज़ ईवन्ज़ नाम का एक कैदी जेल के सभी अधिकारियों को मूर्ख बना देता है और एक सुनियोजित योजना के अन्तर्गत बच निकलता है। अपनी सज़ा काटने के दौरान वह अपनी एक इच्छा व्यक्त करता है कि वह किसी तरह की शैक्षिक योग्यता प्राप्त कर ले। वह जर्मन भाषा में ओ-लेवल (सैकण्ड्री शिक्षा के स्तर का साधारण सर्टिफिकेट) की परीक्षा में बैठना चाहता है। लगभग दस महीने तक एक जर्मन अध्यापक उसे जेल में पढ़ाने के लिए आता है। फिर परीक्षा का प्रबन्ध कैदी की अपनी कोठरी में ही कर दिया जाता है। मकलीरी नाम के एक पादरी को परीक्षा के दौरान निरीक्षक के रूप में भेज दिया जाता है। जेल का गवर्नर स्वयं सुरक्षा के सभी प्रबन्ध करता है ताकि परीक्षा के दौरान कहीं कैदी भाग न जाए। जेल के दो अधिकारियों को उस पर निगरानी रखने के लिए लगा दिया जाता है। परीक्षा समाप्त होने के बाद पादरी सभी कागज़-पत्रों सहित वापस चला जाता है। किन्तु उसके चले जाने के बाद यह पता चलता है कि ईवन्ज़ पादरी का वेश बना कर बच निकला था और बुरी तरह से घायल हुए पादरी को कोठरी में पीछे छोड़ गया था। पादरी कहता है कि वह जानता है ईवन्ज़ को कहां पाया जा सकता था। कैदी को दबोचने के लिए उसे तुरन्त एक पुलिस की गाड़ी में भेज दिया जाता है। पादरी का खून बुरी तरह बह रहा होता है और रास्ते में उसे एक अस्पताल में छोड़ दिया जाता है। किन्तु बाद में पता चलता है कि ऐसा कोई घायल आदमी अस्पताल में नहीं आया था। अब इस बात का आभास हो जाता है कि यह ईवन्ज़ नहीं था जो मकलीरी के वेश में बच निकला था, अपितु यह ईवन्ज़ था जो मकलीरी का वेश बना कर पीछे रह गया था और उसने जेल के सभी अधिकारियों को मूर्ख बना दिया था। वह खून जो उसके सिर से बहता रहा था, वह उसका अपना खून नहीं था। यह किसी सुअर का खून था जो मकलीरी बहुत चतुराईपूर्वक अपने साथ अन्दर ले आया था और यह मकलीरी कोई पादरी भी नहीं था। असली पादरी मकलीरी को इन लोगों ने सुबह से ही उसके कमरे में बांध रखा था। कहानी के अन्त में गवर्नर एक होटल के कमरे में ईवन्ज़ को दबोचने में समर्थ हो जाता है। ईवन्ज़ को हथकड़ी लगा दी जाती है और एक जेल अधिकारी के साथ उसे जेल की गाड़ी में बिठा कर भेज दिया जाता है। किन्तु यहां एक बार फिर ईवन्ज़ गवर्नर को मात दे देता है। जेल अधिकारी और जेल की गाड़ी दोनों ही उस योजना का हिस्सा थीं जो ईवन्ज़ के मित्रों ने तैयार कर रखी थी। ईवन्ज़ जेल से तीन बार पहले भी बच निकला था अब एक बार फिर वह एक आज़ाद पक्षी बन गया था। इसी कारण से जेल के अधिकारी उसे 'जेलतोड़ ईवन्ज़' कह कर बुलाया करते थे।
