It is the story of a king named Maharaja Sir Jilani Jung Jung Bhadur who came to be known as the Tiger King. He was told by the astrologers that his death would come from a tiger. The king was not at all afraid to hear this. He had numberless forests in his State with many tigers in them. One day, he went on a tiger hunt. He was thrilled beyond measure when he killed his first tiger.
He sent for the State astrologer and said, "What do you say now ?" The astrologer said hesitatingly, “Your majesty may kill ninety-nine tigers in the same manner, but you must be very careful with the hundredth." Now the king vowed that he would attend to all other matters only after killing a hundred tigers. The killing of each tiger gave him great joy. After he had killed seventy tigers, no tigers were left in his own forests. Now he married a girl from a royal family. He started hunting the tigers in the forests of his father-in-law. But at last it seemed impossible to find the hundredth tiger.
The king was very angry. The dewan had to arrange for a tiger from some People's Park. It was an old and sickly tiger. There were great celebrations when this tiger was killed. A few days later, the king decided to celebrate his son's third birthday. He got for him a wooden tiger as a present. Both the father and the son played all day with that little toy. All over it, there were tiny slivers of wood. One of these pierced the Maharaja's right hand.
He pulled it out and continued to play with the prince. Next day, infection developed in the king's right hand. In four days, it spread all over the arm. Three famous surgeons decided to operate on the king. When they came out after the operation, they said, “The operation was successful. The Maharaja is dead." यह एक ऐसे राजा की कहानी है जो टाइगर किंग के नाम से जाना जाने लगा। उसे ज्योतिषियों ने बता दिया कि उसकी मृत्यु एक बाघ से होगी। यह सुन कर राजा तनिक भी न डरा। उसके राज्य में अनगिनत जंगल थे और उनमें अनेकों बाघ थे। एक दिन वह बाघों का शिकार करने के लिए गया। उसे असीमित रोमांच अनुभव हुआ जब उसने अपना पहला बाघ मारा। उसने राज्य के ज्योतिषी को बुला भेजा और उससे कहा, "अब तुम क्या कहना चाहोगे ?" ज्योतिषी ने झिझकते हुए उत्तर दिया, “महाराज इसी तरह से निन्यानबे बाघ मार लें, किन्तु सौवें के सम्बन्ध में आप को बहुत सावधान रहना होगा।" अब राजा ने प्रण ले लिया कि वह सौ बाघों को मारने के बाद ही दूसरे विषयों की तरफ़ ध्यान देगा। प्रत्येक बाघ को मारने से उसे बहुत प्रसन्नता महसूस होती थी। सत्तर बाघ मारने के बाद उसके अपने जंगलों में कोई बाघ नहीं रह गए थे। अब उसने एक राजसी परिवार की लड़की से विवाह कर लिया। उसने अपने ससुर के जंगलों में बाघों का शिकार करना शुरू कर दिया। किन्तु अन्त में सौवां बाघ पा लेना असंभव प्रतीत होने लगा। राजा बहुत क्रोधित था। दीवान को किसी पीपल्ज़ पार्क में से एक बाघ का प्रबन्ध करना पड़ा। यह एक बूढ़ा और बीमार-सा बाघ था। जब यह बाघ मारा गया तो वहां भारी उत्सव हुआ। कुछ दिन बाद राजा ने अपने बेटे का तीसरा जन्मदिन मनाने का निश्चय किया। उसने उपहार के लिए उसे एक लकड़ी का बना बाघ ले दिया। पिता और पुत्र दोनों पूरा दिन उस छोटे से खिलौने के साथ खेलते रहे। इसकी पूरी सतह पर लकड़ी की छोटी-छोटी छिपटें थीं। इन में से एक राजा के दाएं हाथ में चुभ गई। उसने इसे खींच कर बाहर निकाल दिया और राजकुमार के साथ खेलता रहा। राजा के दाएँ हाथ में संक्रमण शुरू हो गया। चार दिनों में यह पूरी बांह में फैल गया। तीन प्रसिद्ध सर्जनों ने राजा का आप्रेशन करने का निर्णय लिया। आप्रेशन के बाद जब वे बाहर आए तो उन्होंने कहा, "आप्रेशन सफल रहा। महाराज की मृत्यु हो गई है।" इस प्रकार सौवें बाघ ने टाइगर किंग से आखिर अपना बदला ले लिया।
