"Iswaran the Storyteller" is a story written by R. K. Laxman, and it is taken from the short story collection "Servants of India". "Servants of India" speaks about the unique facades of servants working in various households in India.

"Servants of India" is narrated by a character called Ganesh, a freelance journalist. The book contains narratives about several interesting servants by their respective masters.

Likewise, in our prescribed story "Iswaran the Storyteller", Ganesh was invited by Mahendra to listen to the story about his servant Iswaran. While listening to the story of "Iswaran, the Storyteller", Ganesh was in two minds about whether he should include the story of Iswaran in his chronicle "Servants of India" or not. First, he thought that the story seemed to be strange to believe. Then he decided to use it because 'sometimes reality seemed close to supernatural things'.

TA young man named Mahendra was a junior supervisor in a firm. His job was to keep an eye on the activities at the construction site. He was a bachelor and his needs were simple. He was able to adjust himself to all kinds of conditions. His cook, Iswaran, was most valuable to him. Iswaran was also quite attached to Mahendra. He went with him wherever he was posted. He cooked for Mahendra, washed his clothes and chatted with him at night. He told endless stories to his master.

Iswaran was very good at cooking. During his leisure hours, he was fond of reading some popular Tamil thrillers. The stories that he narrated were greatly influenced by these Tamil thrillers. He narrated even the smallest of incidents by weaving a suspense around it. Every day Iswaran related some story packed with adventure, horror and suspense. Mahendra enjoyed listening to him.

One day, Iswaran prepared a delicious dinner as it was a day to feed the spirits of ancestors. After dinner, Iswaran started his chatting. He told Mahendra that the entire factory area they were occupying was once a burial ground. He said that he often came across a number of skulls and bones lying on the path. He continued to say that he sometimes saw ghosts at night. The ghost of a woman often appeared at midnight during the full moon. She looked ugly with matted hair and a dry, wrinkled face. She carried a foetus in her arms. The description sent a shiver through Mahendra. But he tried to show himself bold by saying that it was just Iswaran's imagination.

From that day on, Mahendra went to bed with a fear in his heart. He liked to admire the landscape on full-moon nights. But after hearing Iswaran's story, he avoided looking out of the window when the moon was full. One night, Mahendra was woken up by a low moan close to his window. When the moaning became louder, Mahendra looked out of the window. He saw a dark cloudy form holding a bundle. Mahendra began to sweat with fear and fell back on the pillow, panting.

Next morning, he had forgotten the horror of the previous night, thinking it to be his imagination. But Iswaran reminded him of it.

He said that he had come running to Mahendra's room at night. He had heard the sound of moaning coming from the room. Mahendra was cold with fear. He hurried to his office. He handed in his papers and determined to leave the haunted place the very next day.

महेन्द्र नाम का एक युवक एक फर्म में जूनियर निरीक्षक था । उसका काम निर्माण की जगह पर चल रहे कार्य पर नज़र रखना था । वह कुँवारा था और उसकी ज़रूरतें साधारण थीं। वह सभी प्रकार की परिस्थितियों से समझौता कर लेता था । उसका रसोइया, ईस्वरन, उसके लिए सबसे अधिक मूल्यवान था । ईस्वरन को भी महेन्द्र से काफ़ी लगाव था । जहाँ भी महेन्द्र की बदली होती, वह उसके साथ जाता। वह महेन्द्र के लिए खाना पकाता, उसके कपड़े धोता और रात को उसके साथ गप्पें लगाता । वह अपने मालिक को बहुत सारी कहानियां सुनाता था।

ईस्वरन खाना पकाने में बहुत कुशल था । अपने खाली समय में उसे तमिल की कुछ प्रसिद्ध रोमांच भरी किताबें पढ़ने का शौक था। वे कहानियाँ, जिनका वह वर्णन करता था, इन तमिल की रोमांच भरी किताबों से वह बहुत प्रभावित होता था । वह छोटी-से-छोटी घटना में भी कौतूहल पैदा करके उन्हें सुनाता था। प्रतिदिन ईस्वरन किसी साहसिक कार्य, दहशत और रोमांच से भरी कहानियां सुनाता था । महेन्द्र को उसकी कहानियां सुन कर बहुत आनन्द आता था।

एक दिन ईस्वरन ने स्वादिष्ट रात्रि भोजन बनाया क्योंकि वह पूर्वजों की आत्माओं को खिलाने का दिन था। रात्रि के भोजन के बाद ईस्वरन ने अपनी गप्प शुरू कर दी। उसने महेन्द्र को बताया कि वह पूरा कारखाने का क्षेत्र, जहां वे रह रहे थे, एक समय में कब्रिस्तान था। उसने कहा कि उसे अकसर सड़क पर पड़ी हुई कई खोपड़ियां और हड्डियां मिलती थीं । उसने कहना जारी रखा कि वह कभी-कभी रात को भूतों को देखता था । पूर्णिमा की रात को अकसर एक औरत आधी रात के समय प्रकट होती थी । उलझे हुए बाल और एक सूखे, झुर्रीदार चेहरे के कारण वह कुरूप दिखती थी। वह अपनी बाँहों में एक भ्रूण उठाए रहती थी। इस वर्णन ने महेन्द्र के अन्दर कंपकंपी पैदा कर दी। किन्तु उसने यह कहते हुए स्वयं को साहसी दिखाने का प्रयत्न किया कि यह केवल ईस्वरन की कल्पना थी । उस दिन से महेन्द्र दिल में एक भय लेकर सोने लगा । पूर्णिमा की रातों को उसे धरती का प्राकृतिक दृश्य देखना अच्छा लगता था । किन्तु ईस्वरन की कहानी सुनने के बाद, पूर्णिमा की रातों को वह खिड़की से बाहर देखना टालने लगा। एक रात खिड़की के समीप ही धीमे स्वर में विलाप करने की आवाज़ सुनकर महेन्द्र की नींद खुल गई। जब विलाप की आवाज़ तेज हो गई तो महेन्द्र ने खिड़की से बाहर देखा। उसने एक काले रंग की धुंधली आकृति को एक गठरी पकड़े हुए देखा । भय से महेन्द्र के पसीने छूटने लगे और वह हाँफता हुआ तकिए पर गिर पड़ा।

अगली सुबह वह पिछली रात की दहशत को अपनी कल्पना समझ कर भूल चुका था। किन्तु ईस्वरन ने उसे इसकी याद दिला दी। उसने कहा कि रात को महेन्द्र के कमरे से आती हुई विलाप की आवाज सुनकर वह दौड़ता हुआ महेन्द्र के कमरे में गया था। महेन्द्र भय से ठण्डा पड़ गया। वह अपने दफ्तर भागा, अपने कागज़ सौंप दिए और दूसरे ही दिन उस भूतिया स्थान को छोड़ देने का दृढ़ निश्चय कर लिया।
